Iran plans to build a refinery in Burkina Faso: A step towards a closer alliance?
Burkina Faso's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olivia Rouamba, visited Tehran on Monday 4 September 2023. In addition to the usual mutual commitments to promote economic, commercial, scientific and educational cooperation, the visit led to the announcement that Iran would build a refinery in Burkina Faso. However, no details were provided on the details, timetable, feasibility or sustainability of such a project for energy production in Burkina Faso. By all appearances, this announcement marks a significant development in relations between the two countries. Iran's growing interest opens up new prospects for its influence on the continent at a time when the West's presence is shrinking in favour of players such as China, Russia and Turkey.

TOWARDS AN AES MULTINATIONAL JOINTTASK FORCE
On March 6, 2024, the Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger unveiled the formation of a joint military force for the countries of the Sahel States Alliance (AES). The AES is a new collective defense alliance among the three Sahel countries established on September 16, 2023, amid tensions with ECOWAS, which then threatened Niger with military intervention to restore democratic order following the overthrow of civilian President Mohamed Bazoum. According to General Barmou, Chief of Staff of the Nigerien Armed Forces, this joint force aims to swiftly address the deadly escalation of jihadist insurgency in the Sahel, which has peaked in 2023 since its inception over a decade ago.

Niger - final mediations before the problematic ECOWAS military intervention
The new government in Niamey reopened its borders with Libya, Chad, Algeria, Burkina Faso and Mali on 1 August. The head of the junta, General Tchiani, has also appointed senior officers from the Niger army as governors of the country's 8 regions. A delegation of several high-ranking members of the CNSP, including number 2 Salifou Mody, also visited Bamako and Ouagadougou on 2 August. The aim of the visit was to coordinate with the two allied capitals to pool efforts in the face of the ECOWAS sanctions. It should be remembered that the regimes in Mali and Burkina Faso have shown solidarity with the government of the Conseil National pour la Sauvegarde de la Patrie (National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland). In a joint communiqué issued on Monday, they warned against any military intervention in Niger to restore deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.
